Paving the Road to a Thriving PLC-IoT Ecosystem
[Shanghai, China, September 8, 2017] During Huawei Connect 2017, Huawei and IEEE PLC-IoT Industry Connections Activity (IEEE PLC-IoT IC) held a ceremony to recognize their recently established collaboration. This collaboration will foster the growth of the PLC-IoT industrial ecosystem and the worldwide adoption of IEEE P1901.1 ‘Standard for Medium Frequency (less than 15 MHz) Power Line Communications for Smart Grid Applications’.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Incorporated (“IEEE”), a not-for-profit corporation, is the world’s largest engineering organization, with over 420,000 members in more than 160 countries, focusing on advancing the theory and practice of electrical technologies, electronics, power engineering, robotics and automation, computer engineering, computer science, and other related technologies and advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) is a leading consensus building organization that nurtures, develops and advances global technologies, through IEEE. Recently, IEEE-SA launched Industry Connections activity IC17-008-01 “PLC-IoT Interoperability and Compliance Testing”.
Huawei and IEEE PLC-IoT IC share a common vision and goals in the PLC-IoT domain. Both parties hope that through their official collaboration relying on OpenLabs, they can construct a series of PLC-IoT certification labs, develop testbeds for multiple PLC-IoT application scenarios, and engage in other projects, building a bridge between technology standards and industrial implementations, and paving the road for a thriving PLC-IoT ecosystem.
Based on Huawei Enterprise BG’s ‘Platform + Ecosystem’ strategy, Huawei created its global OpenLab plan. The strategy’s core is based on R&D innovation with partners and customers, differentiation, and leading industrial solutions to create an open, flexible, secure, and agile platform to drive digital transformation.

For many years, Huawei has consistently participated in IEEE activities and been active on the IEEE standards stage. From 2016, Huawei employees have been actively participating in IEEE PLC-IoT standards activities and are active contributors. OpenLab will cooperate deeply with IEEE PLC-IoT IC using their rich software infrastructure and expert personnel, along with collaborative relationships with our multiple partners, to provide strong support for PLC-IoT certification testing and for the exploration of all kinds of application scenario test beds.”

By the end of June of this year, Huawei had already opened 7 OpenLabs focused on enterprise customers: they are in Suzhou, Munich, Mexico, Singapore, Dubai, Johannesburg, and Bangkok. The plan includes investing 200 million USD in the next three years so that by the end of 2019, there will be 20 enterprise customer-oriented OpenLabs around the world. Up until now, 197 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, out of which 45 are in the top 100, have chosen Huawei as their digital transformation partner.
Huawei Connect 2017 is Huawei’s annual ICT global flagship event. It was held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center from September 5 to 7, 2017. This year’sevent revolved around the “Grow with the Cloud” theme, focusing on the construction of an open collaboration global platform where customers and partners can engage in deep conversations on how to use digital practices to achieve new growth.
